Local rules
Golf carts and LSVs in Indio
- Permitted golf carts may use city-designated paths, sidewalks and bike lanes, and all residential streets posted 25 mph or less. Citations may be issued anywhere else.
- A city permit is required. The cart must first pass a safety equipment inspection arranged through Indio Police, and the permit is valid for two years.
- Required equipment includes seat belts, headlights, brake and rear lights, turn signals, a horn, mirrors, red reflectors, a parking brake, a backup buzzer and a covered passenger compartment.
- Drivers must be licensed, and both the driver and the cart must be insured. Proof of insurance must be carried while driving.
- Seat belts must be worn at all times. Carts may cross public streets only at intersections with pedestrian crosswalks and must yield to bicycles and pedestrians on shared paths.
- Children may not drive golf carts on city cart lanes and paths.

Can I drive a golf cart on Indio streets?

How do I get an Indio golf cart permit?
Call the Indio Police Department Records Section at (760) 391-4057, press 2, to schedule a safety equipment inspection. Once the cart passes and you show proof of insurance, the city issues a permit decal for the right rear fender, good for two years.
What insurance do I need?
Both the driver and the cart must be insured, and you must show proof of insurance to get the permit and carry it while driving. The city notes a recreational vehicle policy may be required, so check with your insurance agent.
Does a 4, 6 or 8 seat cart fit the city program?
The city program is written for two-seat carts that go no more than 25 mph. Our carts are built as street-legal LSVs, which California Vehicle Code 21260 allows on roads posted 35 mph or less. Ask the city at GolfCartProgram@Indio.org if you also want to use its cart paths.
