Street-legal LSVs for La Jolla
La Jolla is part of the City of San Diego, whose golf cart zones are in Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos, not La Jolla. That leaves California law: a low-speed vehicle (LSV) can be driven on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less. Every Backyard Escapism cart is built as a street-legal LSV with lights, turn signals, mirrors and a seat belt per seat, in 4, 6 and 8 seat layouts with lithium batteries.

Local rules
Golf carts and LSVs in La Jolla
- An LSV may not be driven on any road with a speed limit over 35 mph.
- An LSV may cross a road posted over 35 mph only at an intersection of about 90 degrees, starting and ending on roads posted 35 mph or less.
- An LSV may not cross a state highway at an uncontrolled intersection unless the agency responsible for that crossing has approved it.
- California defines an LSV, also called a neighborhood electric vehicle, as a four-wheeled motor vehicle with a top speed over 20 mph and up to 25 mph and a gross vehicle weight rating under 3,000 pounds.
- The San Diego Municipal Code makes it unlawful to drive any vehicle on a sidewalk, except across a permanent driveway.
- A golf cart is a separate class in California: built for two people or fewer, no faster than 15 mph, and kept off roads posted over 25 mph unless a local ordinance allows it.

La Jolla golf cart questions
Can I drive an LSV in La Jolla?
Yes, on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less, under California Vehicle Code 21260. La Jolla is in the City of San Diego, whose municipal code bars driving any vehicle on a sidewalk except across a driveway.
Does La Jolla have a golf cart zone?
No. The San Diego Municipal Code sets up zones for unregistered golf carts only in Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos. Those carts are limited to two people and daylight hours. In La Jolla, a registered LSV under state law is the street-legal option.
Can I cross a faster road?
Only at an intersection of about 90 degrees, and the crossing has to start and end on roads posted 35 mph or less. You may not cross a state highway at an uncontrolled intersection unless the agency in charge of that crossing has approved it.
Why buy an LSV instead of a golf cart here?
A California golf cart is built for two people or fewer and 15 mph, and the DMV says one modified to carry more people or go faster has to meet full passenger-vehicle safety standards. Our carts are built as street-legal LSVs in 4, 6 and 8 seat layouts, with lights, mirrors, a seat belt per seat and a VIN.
